What is Biblical Meditation?

So what does the bible say about meditation?
Biblical meditation is not about emptying your mind but intentionally filling it with God’s Word (bible verses). It involves pondering Scripture with an open heart, allowing the Holy Spirit to work through those words, actively and intentionally thinking about those words. Unlike other forms of meditation that focus on “emptiness”, biblical meditation renews the mind by concentrating on God’s words, transforming our thoughts and lives as emphasized “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” (Romans 12:2).

Here are some more bible verses:

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (Joshua 1:8)

Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night.” (Psalm 1:1-2)

“I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways” (Psalm 119:15)

Christian Meditation For Beginners

Christian meditation is simple. Find a quiet place away from distraction, ideally with a paper Bible to avoid phone distractions too. Get comfortable, take some deep breaths, and focus on a Bible verse, perhaps from Psalms which is a great place to start. Reflect on it deeply (perhaps just one word or a phrase), allowing the Holy Spirit to bring insight. Speak it out loud, memorize it, and keep repeating it out loud and in your mind too. Give it space as you do so. Don’t rush this process. How does it apply to you? What is the Lord saying about it? Just sit with it for a while. And even after your meditation session, let it resonate throughout your day. Use these guided videos if needed. Remember, Christian meditation is about filling your mind with God’s Word, not emptying it to nothingness. With practice, you’ll improve your focus and deepen your connection with Him. Make room to feel His presence as you do so.
“In your presence there is fullness of joy” (Psalm 16:11)

How To Make Christian Meditation A Daily Habit?

Incorporating daily Bible reading and meditation into your routine can transform your spiritual life. It may sound overwhelming at first but just start to make small changes and start small. Perhaps get up 10minutes earlier than usual to do this first thing in the morning. Or you might want to set aside time before bed or on your lunch break. Find a way that to incorporate it in to your current lifestyle where you can easily make this a daily habit. Of course you will have to sacrifice something e.g. turning to the bible instead of social media on your lunch. But you DO need to be intentional with your time if you want to get anything done. After all, you are intentional about getting that cup of coffee and making time for it right? Rather than waiting to see if you have time to fit it in somewhere during the day, it is best if you can plan it ahead and prioritize this time. And it often starts the night before e.g. go to bed a bit earlier with the bible on the dining table where you usually have your coffee for example. Design your life so that it’s easier to build these habits. You won’t regret it!
